LOOKING FOR ANGOLA A thriving community made up of blacks and escaped slaves during the early 1800's that settled along the Manatee River in Bradenton in 1812. Historians say in 1821 General Andrew Jackson ordered the destruction of Angola after the United States bought Florida from Spain. Today, archaeologists, anthropologists and a team of people are conducting a live ongoing archaeological site looking for Angola.

ANGOLA CLASSROOM CONNECTIONS is a joint effort of the Angola Project, the Herald-Tribune Media Group's Newspaper In Education Program and school districts throughout the region. This is a collaboration of a live field project uncovering a gap in our local history that till recently most never knew existed with our Newspaper In Education Curriculum Development Team.
